THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACREThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the true milestones of the horror film genre. Tobe Hooper’s shocking 1974 original follows a group of young people who end up at the home of a bizarre and cannibalistic family in the Texas countryside – and encounter the masked chainsaw killer Leatherface. Despite its low budget, the film became a huge success and has since established itself as one of the most influential horror films of all time.
Since the original, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has grown into a full-fledged franchise with sequels, remakes, comic books, video games and an enormous range of merchandise. Above all, Leatherface has become an icon far beyond the world of horror – his distinctive mask and chainsaw have become instantly recognisable symbols of the darker side of popular culture. More than 50 years after its premiere, the legacy lives on through films, vinyl, T-shirts, mugs and other collectible merchandise for horror fans around the world. In 2024, the original film was also added to the US National Film Registry for its cultural, historical and aesthetic significance.
